PATINS Project Recognized
The PATINS Project has been recognized by Don Johnston Inc. “for its outstanding leadership efforts in the use of technology for promoting literacy success” in Indiana schools. For 16 years the PATINS Project has had a positive impact on the lives of students with disabilities through its efforts to support Indiana’s local educational agencies in the provision and implementation of accessible and assistive technologies.
The project provides all Indiana local educational agencies access to a free download of two software programs, Read:OutLoud and the DAISYtoEPUB Converter, through its Indiana Center for Accessible Materials (ICAM). The ICAM provides a district-wide license with take-home rights for school use with ALL students, including students with disabilities.
• The Read:OutLoud software program provides access to the print curriculum for students who are print disabled or who are struggling readers by providing text-to-speech and study tools that help with reading comprehension.
• The DAISY to EPUB Converter software is a program that converts NIMAS, DAISY, MS Word, Text, HTML, and Bookshare files into an ePub format for use on eBook readers like the iPad, Nook, Sony Reader or Android devices.
